Facebook CEO\/sucker for pain Mark Zuckerberg has penned a WaPo column calling on governments to take a more \u201cactive role\u201d in regulating the internet.<\/p>\n
He outlined four main areas for regulators to tackle\u2026<\/p>\n
1. Harmful content<\/strong><\/p>\n The problem: Facebook serves as a platform for its billions of regular users to post content. But when that content is more \u201cterrorist propaganda\u201d than \u201cbrunch photo,\u201d the company has struggled to determine the right approach to removing it. Zuck said he agrees with lawmakers that Facebook has too much power over what constitutes free speech.<\/p>\n Zuck\u2019s solution: Develop a more standardized approach by setting up an independent body of non-FB employees to enforce rules. Think a Supreme Court.<\/p>\n 2. Protecting elections<\/strong><\/p>\n The problem: Misinformation campaigns (aka \u201cfake news\u201d) on Facebook have interfered with democratic elections around the world. But as the company tries to provide more transparency, it\u2019s having trouble classifying what should or shouldn\u2019t be considered \u201cpolitical.\u201d<\/p>\n Zuck\u2019s solution: Let governments set common standards for verifying political actors. The NYT\u2019s Mike Isaac thinks this could work: \u201cWhen the next erroneous outburst inevitably occurs, Facebook could point toward the law it was forced to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n 3. Privacy<\/strong><\/p>\n The problem: The Cambridge Analytica scandal revealed that Facebook was playing fast and loose with user data.
